ABOUT ME

¡Saludos y bienvenidos! I’m Rachel. I love all things language.

Professionally speaking, I’m double-majoring in Spanish (with a linguistics concentration) and Translation, and minoring in writing at Sweetland. I’m an editor for Canon, the Comparative Literature department’s undergraduate translation magazine, and I also work with ELP Spanish students as an Academic Peer Leader for the Comprehensive Studies Program.

Who I am as a writer heavily correlates with who I am as a person. I’m an old soul—I love oldies music, early bedtimes, sewing, cooking, baking, and canning my own food, “classic” games (card/board games, NYT word games, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy), Legos, the list goes on. I believe that one of the most valuable things in life is storytelling. I could spend the rest of my life sitting and talking to just about anyone—family, friends, even strangers—about all the life experiences they’ve had. That being said, creative nonfiction is one of my favorite genres. I love to listen to other humans tell their stories just as much as telling my own. Writing has always been my way to cope with life and connect with humanity, and this website is a testament to that fact. Welcome to my world.

CURRENT PROJECTS

A final project for a class my freshman year turned into something I've come to be so incredibly proud of. I authored, illustrated, and translated a book! Originally written bilingually in Spanish and English, it tells the story of what it's like to grow into a new language—the words, the culture surrounding it, the new sense of self-identity, and the connections you make along the way. Its English translation is out now on the Canon website!

Myself and the other editors of Canon have put in SO much work giving new life to the Comparative Literature Department's undergraduate translation journal. We just finished creating our new website (I designed the logo!) and publishing brand new submissions. Check it out! Submit your translations! Submissions are open to any undergraduate student at U of M.

GATEWAY PROJECTS

  • The piece from which my gateway experiments and this proposed project originated is the book I authored, illustrated, and translated, “Alas y Raíces,” or in English, “Roots and Wings.” It encapsulates the internal identity conflict of what it’s like to learn a new language and adapt to its surrounding environment. An excerpt of its English translation is attached above.

  • My proposed project, a memoir entitled “En Lugar de una Madre,” would draw from my own personal experience learning Spanish as a second language and the impact that this decision and process have had on my life. The buttons below each lead to an example of the kinds of glimpses into my life that might be included in a longer version of the piece.
